Reuse Warehouse

The Reuse Warehouse provides reusable building materials to Houston residents while helping reduce waste sent to local landfills. The program accepts donated materials and makes them available for reuse, supporting sustainability and community reuse efforts across the city.

Program Guidelines

The Reuse Warehouse operates under guidelines designed to ensure safety, efficiency, and fair access to materials for all participants.

  • All materials must be clean, safe, and in reusable condition
  • Acceptance of materials is determined by staff upon inspection
  • Items that do not meet program standards may be declined
  • Inventory varies daily and availability is not guaranteed
  • Materials are offered on a first come, first served basis
  • Participants are responsible for selecting, loading, and transporting all materials
  • No pickup or delivery services are provided
  • Donation receipts are available upon request
  • Calling ahead is recommended for questions about acceptable materials
  • Paint, hazardous materials, and construction debris are not accepted

Eligibility

  • Open to all City of Houston residents to make donations
  • Organizations, non-profits and community groups are welcome take materials

Acceptable Materials

  • Lumber, plywood, and paneling
  • Cabinets, countertops, and doors
  • Flooring materials such as tile and carpet that are clean and reusable
  • Windows, glass, and mirrors
  • Plumbing fixtures including sinks, tubs, and faucets
  • Lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, and electrical components
  • Energy-efficient appliances
  • Bricks, pavers, concrete blocks, and stone
  • Hardware, tools, and general building supplies

NOTE: All items must be free of significant damage, excessive wear, or safety hazards to be considered for acceptance.

Materials Not Accepted

For safety and quality control, certain materials cannot be accepted at the Reuse Warehouse. These include:

  • Paint, solvents, and other hazardous materials
  • Construction debris, rubble, or demolition waste
  • Rotten, moldy, or structurally damaged materials
  • Tear-off roofing shingles
  • Appliances that are not energy efficient
  • Items containing hazardous components or contamination risks

All donations are subject to inspection, and staff reserve the right to decline items that do not meet program standards.


Accessing Materials

Materials in the Reuse Warehouse inventory are available at no cost on a first come, first served basis. Nonprofit organizations may be asked to provide proof of status when applicable. Inventory changes frequently, and specific items cannot be reserved or guaranteed. Participants are encouraged to visit regularly to view available materials.

Organizations interested in tracking material reuse may participate in the Ton Club, which recognizes cumulative materials diverted from landfills at milestone levels.

To receive updates on events and general information, email reuse.warehouse@houstontx.gov with the subject line “Add to e-mail list.” Due to the nature of inventory turnover, updates on specific available items are not provided.

Making a Donation

The Reuse Warehouse accepts building materials that are in suitable condition for reuse. All donations are subject to inspection, and the City reserves the right to decline items that do not meet program standards.

Donors are encouraged to call 281-814-3324 in advance to confirm whether materials are appropriate for donation.
