City of Houston Celebrates Grand Opening of Avenue C
Providing a new chapter for seniors in historic Magnolia Park
June 1, 2026 -- Houston, Texas -- The City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) joined community leaders, project partners, and residents to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Avenue C, a New Hope Housing development dedicated to serving seniors ages 55 and older in Houston's historic Magnolia Park neighborhood.
Supported by a $3 million investment from the City of Houston, Avenue C marks a meaningful milestone for the East End community as the first affordable housing development in Magnolia Park in more than 30 years. The New Hope Housing development brings 120 apartment homes to the neighborhood, offering a mix of one- and two-bedroom units for low- to moderate-income individuals earning 30%, 50%, and 60% of the Area Median Income.
"The City of Houston is proud to stand alongside our partners in celebrating Avenue C, a development that reflects the kind of thoughtful investment Houston’s seniors deserve,” expressed Mike Nichols, Director of the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department. “One of HCD’s greatest strengths is helping fill the critical funding gaps that allow quality affordable housing developments like this to move forward, a role that has become even more important as interest rates, construction costs, and insurance costs continue to rise."
Avenue C pairs award-winning architecture with thoughtfully designed on-site services that foster a welcoming environment for residents.
Meet Mr. Gomez, the First Resident to Call Avenue C Home
A proud veteran, Mr. Gomez is settling into a community designed with comfort, accessibility, and connection in mind. He especially appreciates the tailored supportive-programming and convenience of being within walking distance of the Veterans Hall.
"Avenue C is a meaningful addition to Magnolia Park and District I, creating quality affordable housing for seniors in a neighborhood with deep roots and a strong sense of community,” said Council Member Joaquin Martinez, District I. “This development is especially personal to me because my mother is a proud resident of Avenue C. I know firsthand what it means for seniors and their families to have access to a safe, beautiful, and supportive place to call home."
The ribbon cutting celebration marked more than the opening of a new development, it marked a new chapter for seniors like Mr. Gomez and the Magnolia Park community. Avenue C reflects the City’s continued commitment to expanding Houston’s affordable housing stock through quality, service-connected communities that help residents stay supported and rooted in the neighborhoods they know and love.
