Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 2323 South Kirkwood Road

June 1, 2026 - Charges have been filed against three suspects arrested in the fatal shooting of a male and the wounding of a female at 6000 Bissonnet about 5:10 a.m. on March 29.

The suspects are Victor Enoc Ortez-Montoya, 20, Joel Calderon, 19, and Carlos H. Medrano Palacios, 17. Ortez-Montoya is charged with murder and aggrevated assault with a deadly weapon in the 209th and 351st Criminal District Court, respectively. Calderon is charged with murder in the 209th Criminal District Court. Medrano Palacios is charged with deadly conduct discharge firearms in the 179th Criminal District Court.

The deceased victim is identified as Edwin Gayton, 20.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. Persad and Detectives C. Bowling and L. Yasin reported:

Officers responded to a shooting call at the above address and located two individuals suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported a male to an area hospital where doctors pronounced him deceased. A female, 18, was also transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

According to witnesses, the shooting occurred at a nearby apartment during a party where a verbal altercation led to multiple individuals discharging firearms.

Officers arrested Carlos H. Medrano Palacios on the day of the incident and he was charged for firing several shots during the incident.

On April 3, Joel Calderon was arrested for unrelated charges. He was subsequently charged for his role in this incident.

On May 28, Victor Enoc Ortez-Montoya was arrested and charged for his role in this incident.
