Derecho and Hurricane Beryl
Single-Family Home Repair Program

The City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department’s DR24 Single-Family Home Repair Program provides rehabilitation and reconstruction assistance to eligible Houston homeowners whose primary residences were damaged by the May 2024 Derecho or Hurricane Beryl.

Program Note:

Initial Application Priority

Priority processing through December 31, 2026, will be given to households at or below 80% of the Area Median Income that include:

  • A household member age 62 or older; or
  • A household member with a disability; or
  • A disabled veteran

Program Overview

The program provides major repair and rebuilding assistance designed to restore safe and livable housing conditions and help homes better withstand future storms.

Eligible program participants will fall under one of the two pathways below

Home Repair

  • Eligible homeowners may receive up to $100,000 to repair and restore their existing home.
  • Assistance may address critical damage and bring the property into compliance with current safety, building, and livability standards.

Reconstruction

  • Eligible homeowners whose homes cannot be reasonably repaired may receive up to $300,000 for full reconstruction.
  • Assistance supports the replacement of severely damaged homes with safe, resilient housing built to current standards.

Step 1: Understanding Basic Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The home must be the applicant’s primary residence
  • The property must be located within Houston city limits.

  • The property must be located outside of a designated floodway.
  • The home must have sustained damage from the May 2024 Derecho and/or Hurricane Beryl.
  • The household must have an income at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

Prospective applicants may call (832) 394-6200 to request an application packet. Once packet is issued, each applicant will receive an application ID number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I complete and submit my application online? -

A. No. At this time, applications cannot be completed or submitted online. Completed application packets must be submitted using one of the approved submission methods outlined on the webpage.

Q: How long does the application process take from start to finish? -

A. Application processing can take up to 8 weeks, provided a complete application packet with all of required supporting documentation is submitted. Missing documents may delay processing.

Q: I received FEMA assistance, but it wasn't enough to complete the repairs. Can I still apply? -

A. Yes. Receiving Federal Emergency Management Assistance (FEMA) does not automatically disqualify you from the DR24 Home Repair Program. Your eligibility will be determined based on the program guidelines.

Q: Can I apply if I am still making mortgage payments on my home? -

A. Yes. Homeowners who are still paying a mortgage may apply, provided they meet all other program eligibility requirements.

Q: What happens to my home if I pass away after receiving assistance? -

A. Ownership of the home would pass to your heirs in accordance with applicable laws and program requirements.
